Reading Notes: Part A: Cradle Tales of Hinduism

For the next week I will be reading 'Cradle Tales of Hinduism.'

This post is dedicated to Part A of these tales. The first story to catch my eye and inspire a retelling was, The Birth of Krishna. I have never done a retelling of the beginning of ones live or the beginning of the epic. I always end up focusing on the action that begins later in the epic. I was shocked at the negativity and evil surrounding this birth. All of the descriptive words give this entire story an almost scary vibe. I thought it was interesting that they were shocked that the child was a girl, and the violence Kansa almost committed upon it. Even though the baby proved it was worthy and a goddess, I thought it would be interesting to do a retelling if Krishna was a boy and how much different this story would have gone. I would expect a lot less negativity, and more celebration.

The other story in Part A that I wanted to highlight was The Lifting of the Mountain. I found this story to be confusing and did not really enjoy the way it was written. It was very slow and almost hard to read at times. I overall enjoy the content of the story, just not the way it was written. This is what made me want to do a retelling of this story. I see all the different ways it could be improved and want to do so.
