I have decided to focus on the topic of Women of the Epics. I have decided on this topic because of how interesting the stories for this topic are. I feel like it would be really interesting to alter these stories to make the women seem more powerful than the men because in so many of the stories, the men are the ones with all the power and prestige.
The Three Stories:
Gandhari: A Mother Blinded By Love
This story focuses on the princess Gandhari. In this story Gandhari's father arranges a marriage with her with a blind man. In order for Gandhari to want to feel equal to her new husband, she blind folds herself for the rest of her life. I could easily alter this story, as I feel like it is a very low view of women. Even though the story focuses on Gandhari, it makes her seem weak as she must lower her power to match her new husband. I could also tell the story from her husbands point of view in order to show his great appreciation for what his new wife has done. This story is told through a comic, and it would be interesting to tell it in more of a story format.
Draupadi: The Dusky Firebrand
The story of Draupadi tells of her origin from being birthed from a fire. However, the story begins to focus on the five men that she marries and how they are forced into exile. My favorite part of the story is when she is rescued and fulfills her lifelong destiny. I could tell this story in a way that foreshadows that she will always fulfill her destiny, instead of making her seem weak the whole time. I could also alter to story to make it so she helps fulfill her own destiny, as it makes it seem that it was only thanks to the falling of the Kauravas.
Return of the Dead Wife
I found this story incredibly interesting as it tells of Ruru and his wife Priyamvada who is killed. Ruru realizes that he cannot live without her and begs the god of death to not let her fully die. He makes a deal with him to give half of his life to her. I could show this story with Priyamvada doing this instead of Ruru.
