Alas, we have come to the end of our introduction to Mahabharata. Here is my reading notes on the final section for the public domain edition.
One episode from Part D of this epic was 'The Night Raid', which told of the revenge that Ashwatthaman seeks on the Pandavas for killing of Drona. This episode was very dramatic, and you could feel the tension between all of the characters. You could even feel as if the Pandavas knew this attack was coming. This is probably why the raid was completed at night. This killing was very violent, which makes sense due to the underlying reason behind the revenge. To alter this story, I would want to do something more dramatic than I have. I typically change something very small and insignificant. That is one of the items of feedback that I receive the most. I think in my retelling I would completely change all of the characters. Due to the violent nature of this episode, I would want to make all of the characters some kind of violent animal instead. I am thinking about making them all lions, and taking away all dialogue in the story.
Another episode I found particular interest in was 'Horse Sacrifice.' If you have read my introduction, you may think it is odd that I even wanted to discuss this episode since I like horses so much. However, this is the reason I found this story interesting. In this episode they ask the horse to speak before they sacrifice it. I would alter this story by giving insight and dialogue from the horse throughout the entire retelling, instead of just in that moment. I found it so fascinating how much they respect and honor the horse even though they kill it. This would be something to highlight in my retelling.
