Feedback Strategies

How To Give Students Specific Feedback That Actually Helps Them

First and foremost this discusses how the feedback you give someone needs to be specific in order to help them. If you simply tell someone their paper is good or bad, they have no idea what they should be focusing on to improve. One piece of advice I enjoyed from the article said that a student should never wonder the next move when they receive feedback.  The feedback they are given should be specific enough so they know exactly what they need to do next in order to fix the problem. This also discussed how feedback needs to be ongoing in order to be useful. This means that leaving feedback after each draft is much more helpful than just giving in once. That way you can observe the progress that is made.

The Difference Between Praise and Feedback

One of the main points I enjoyed from this article is how it explained when you praise someone for their traits in which they are talented. This deters the person from wanting to try something new or something they consider themselves untalented at. When you focus only on someones talents, you are stunting their growths in other areas. When people only receive praise, they are much less likely to want to try something that they will not receive this praise. This emphasizes the importance of giving both praise and feedback.
